Facts behind the calculation

The following numbers were used in the above calculation:

  • 20% of working-age people experience a mild or moderate mental illness. [Source: Netherlands Institute of Psychologists]
  • Average absenteeism in the Netherlands is 4.5% of the total number of days worked in a year. [Source: CBS]]
  • 1/3 of this absenteeism is caused by psychological complaints. [Source: Netherlands Institute of Psychologists]
  • We assumed 260 workable days per year for a full-time employee in the calculation.
  • To calculate the annual cost of absenteeism, we assumed a modal income of €3,000 gross per month with a 40% mark-up for employer expenses.
